FAQ

What will the weather be like?

COLD!!!! According to the National Weather Service, the average high in February is 44 °F (7 °C), the average low is 26 °F (-3 °C), and the average snowfall is 10 inches (25 cm).

Is there a dress code?   What should I wear?

The event will be semi-formal. Wear whatever makes you feel fancy! It is requested that you refrain from wearing a wedding dress, but if that’s really all you have to wear, we prefer that to you going naked a la Betazoid* wedding style.

Keep in mind that SLC tends to be quite chilly in the winter and we are planning for a short ceremony on the roof, so bundle up! There will be a place to leave coats and other items inside during the reception.

* Refer to Star Trek The Next Generation Season 1 Episode 11.

What kind of shoes should I wear?

We recommend warm and sturdy footwear for getting to and from the library, as Salt Lake City can be very icy and snowy in the winter. Once you arrive, we will have a location set aside where you can change and store shoes. Please feel free to bring whatever shoes make you feel comfortable and/or fancy, and change in and out of them as needed.

Should I rent a car? How do I get from the airport to the hotel?

Renting a car is not necessary. The TRAX train line runs straight from the airport to the library. Several hotels and restaurants are also on the train line or within a 10 minute walk. The library is close to downtown, so many bars and attractions are a short taxi or Uber ride away. However, some attractions, such as the Natural History Museum and ski resorts, are more easily reached by car. Depending on what you plan to do while in town, it might be easier to get around in a car, but renting one is not strictly required.

How do I get to the venue?

If you are staying in one of the hotels near the library, you can take the train or walk. However, the train will stop running before the reception is over. The hearty among you may choose to walk back, but we recommend a taxi or Uber back to the hotel if you’d prefer to avoid the bitter evening cold.

Where do I park? Do I have to pay for parking?

We are still confirming parking details with the venue. Be advised that some hotels may charge a lot more for parking than nearby city parking structures.

I live in LA. Should I drive or fly?

The economics of driving to SLC from LA start to make sense if you have at least two people in your car. Be advised that it’s a very full day of driving, and road conditions can deteriorate quickly if there is a storm. Leaving very early in the morning makes the trip seem faster, and usually puts you in Salt Lake by late afternoon (unless you make repeated Wendy’s stops). Las Vegas is about a 3rd of the way if you want to make it a two day trip.

Are kids welcome?

Are you kidding? It’s Utah. The more kids the merrier! We will also have an on site kids room and babysitter!

Can I bring a date?

We’ve worked hard to create a small, intimate celebration with our closest and dearest family and friends. We ask for your support by limiting +1s to significant others and spouses. We have tried to include those we know of in the RSVP form, but if we have missed someone or if you have a question then please let us know! Thank you for understanding.

Is there a gift registry?

Not yet, but we plan to post one on this site soon.

Will alcohol be served at the wedding? Will there be an open bar or cash bar?

There will be a limited open bar with beer, wine, and a signature cocktail. Cheers!

What time should I arrive?

The ceremony will begin promptly at 5:30pm, so please arrive 10 – 15 minutes before. There will be hot chocolate served by cozy fireplaces so you can warm up while you wait.

Should I plan to go skiing while I’m there?

YESSS!!! Salt Lake is famous for having some of the best snow in the world, and we purposely selected our wedding date with skiing and snowboarding in mind. The library is a mere 40 minute drive from the slopes. There may* also be a shuttle from downtown to the major ski resorts. We are researching group ski discounts for the days immediately following the wedding. We plan to spend a few days on the slopes before leaving for our honeymoon, and would love for you to join us if you can. If this sounds like something you’d enjoy please complete the poll in the RSVP section. Don’t let inexperience deter you from the fun! Kate has only tried to ski once (rather unsuccessfully), and will try snowboarding for the first time after the wedding. There are also fantastic mixed drinks and hot tubs at the ski resorts for those who are not inclined to brave the slopes.

* We are working to confirm that this mythical beast exists.

Does your wedding have a theme?

Our theme is geek chic. It was inspired by a trip to a dusty Caltech supply store to buy glass labware for an experiment. The color scheme is based on our vintage astronomy and Space Race art work. Expect nerdy details a la The Big Bang Theory, but the vows will not be in Klingon.

Why did you pick February 22nd?

We wanted to get married in Alex’s hometown. Since most of the guests will be traveling for the wedding, we hoped out-of-towners would be able to turn the trip into a mini vacation. It’s cheaper to travel in February, the ski resorts aren’t as crowded, and there’s great powder (for those of you from warmer climates, that’s a posh word for snow). Of all the available dates in late winter, 2/22 seemed like the easiest one to remember for future anniversaries. It is also the conjunction* of Mars and Venus, which Kate found highly amusing (you know… Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus).
